Getting started with Monitaria
From importing the collector VM to alerts in Slack or Teams, in eight short steps, plus fixes for common problems.
Step 1: Import the collector VM
Get the image for your hypervisor from the download page: OVA for VMware and VirtualBox, VHDX for Hyper-V, qcow2 for Proxmox and KVM.
- Import the image and give the VM at least 2 vCPU, 2 GB RAM and 20 GB of disk.
- Connect its network adapter to the site network you want to monitor.
- Start the VM. Its console shows the IP address and a setup code.
Step 2: Open the dashboard and create the admin
- In a browser on the same network, go to
https://<vm-ip>/. - The collector uses its own certificate, so your browser shows a warning the first time. Accept it to continue.
- Enter the setup code shown on the VM console.
- Create the administrator account.
Step 3: Discover devices
A new collector starts scanning its own network on first start. To add devices:
- Open Devices › Discovery and, under This network, choose Scan.
- Reach further with Networks behind the router (reads the router's VLANs over SNMP so you can pick which to scan), Neighbors (finds devices plugged into monitored gear via CDP/LLDP) or Other sites (scans each site router's VLANs across the WAN). You can also scan any subnet.
- Results come back as a checklist. Tick the devices you want and choose Add selected.
Scanned networks are re-checked on a schedule, and new devices are listed for review or added automatically.
Step 4: Add a website
- Go to Devices › Sensors and choose + Website sensor….
- Enter a Name and the Web address (URL); Device starts as Websites. Optionally fill in Text the page must contain.
- Choose Test to check it once before saving it.
- Choose Save. For HTTPS sites, Also watch the TLS certificate's expiry adds a certificate-expiry sensor too.
Step 5: Set up dashboards
- Open Overview and pick a dashboard: Network health, Executive summary, Printers & supplies, Endpoints or Servers & services.
- As an admin, choose Edit to add, remove, move or resize widgets, and to set filters by device type, site, check or period.
- To start fresh, create a new dashboard from a template or from a blank page.
Step 6: Users and two-factor authentication
- Admins add and manage accounts in Settings › Users.
- New collectors require two-factor sign-in for admins, who set it up at their first sign-in. Everyone else can turn it on under Account › Two-factor authentication, and an admin can require it for everyone in Settings › Security.
Step 7: Link the collector to the hub
- On the hub, choose Add site.
- Copy the hub URL, site ID and secret it shows.
- On the collector, open Settings › Hub link, choose Link to the hub…, paste the hub URL, site ID and secret, and choose Link.
The collector connects out over HTTPS only. No inbound firewall ports are needed. The link is optional: without it, the collector runs standalone.
Step 8: Set up alerts
Open Settings › Alerts. Fill in the email server and choose Send test email, then add rules that email your team or post to a Slack or Microsoft Teams incoming webhook, or any service that accepts JSON. Each rule has Send a test to this rule.
A sensor only goes down after the set number of failures in a row, and threshold warnings must repeat (twice by default), so one slow ping doesn't send an alert.
Step 9: Troubleshooting
- Devices show no services
- Check that firewalls and ACLs allow ping, SNMP (UDP 161) and the probed ports from the collector's IP address.
- SNMP isn't answering
- The community string is wrong, or SNMP isn't enabled for the collector's IP address on the device.
- A site shows “stale” on the hub
- The collector has stopped pushing. Check its power and network, and that the VM is running.
- Which version am I running?
- It's next to your name in the header (in Menu on narrow screens). Click it for Help › About this collector, which also gives the build. Admins see Update available there when a newer release is out.
- Lost the admin password
- On the VM console, run
monitaria users passwd <name>to set a new password.
