FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about what Monitaria does, how it connects, and how to buy it. For setup steps, see the help guide.

The product

Can alerts go to different people for different devices?

Yes. Alert rules route by device type, site and status to email (any SMTP server, including Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace) or to webhooks such as Teams and Slack. Devices at a remote site depend on its router automatically, so a WAN outage raises one alert instead of one per device, and maintenance windows silence planned work.

What does Monitaria monitor?

Network and infrastructure devices at each site: routers, switches, firewalls, Wi-Fi access points and controllers, voice gateways, IP phones, printers, servers, UPS and power, and cameras. Computers, laptops, phones and tablets are tracked for presence.

Checks include ping, TCP ports, HTTP(S), DNS, TLS-certificate expiry, SNMP v1, v2c and v3 (interface bandwidth, uptime, printer status and toner levels) and Windows servers over WinRM. It can also watch websites and services outside your network.

Which devices does discovery recognize?

Discovery sorts devices into routers, switches, firewalls, Wi-Fi access points, wireless controllers, voice gateways, IP phones, printers, servers, UPS and power, cameras, computers and laptops, and phones and tablets. Websites and services you add form their own group.

Duplicate addresses of the same router or switch are recognized as one device, and generic devices get their real names from CDP/LLDP.

How do laptops and tablets work without false alarms?

Computers, laptops, tablets and phones are monitored for presence. When one isn't seen, it shows as offline rather than down, raises no alert, and doesn't lower the health score. Their names come from NetBIOS, mDNS and DNS.

Can I monitor websites outside my network?

Yes. Add a website and Monitaria checks its status over HTTP or HTTPS, its response time and, optionally, text that must appear on the page. You can also check TLS-certificate expiry, DNS records, TCP ports and ping. Test runs a check before you save it.

How do dashboards work and can I change them?

The overview shows a network health score: the share of devices that are fully up, with warnings counting as half. Five built-in dashboards follow common NOC practice: Network health, Executive summary, Printers & supplies, Endpoints and Servers & services.

Admins can add, remove, reorder and resize widgets, filter them by device type, site, check or period, and create new dashboards from a template or from scratch.

Network and deployment

Do I need to open firewall ports?

No. The collector makes outbound HTTPS connections to the hub. Nothing on the internet connects in, so there are no inbound rules, port forwards or VPNs to set up.

Does it work without the hub?

Yes. Each collector runs standalone, with its own dashboard, history, discovery and alerts. The hub adds a single view across sites, and the collector keeps monitoring if the internet link drops.

Which hypervisors are supported?

The collector is a virtual appliance available as OVA for VMware ESXi, VMware Workstation and VirtualBox, VHDX for Microsoft Hyper-V, and qcow2 for Proxmox VE and KVM/QEMU.

System requirements

How many devices can one collector handle?

A collector typically handles hundreds to a few thousand sensors, depending on check types, intervals and the VM's resources. For larger or segmented networks you can add more collectors.

Which SNMP versions are supported?

SNMP v1, v2c and v3. SNMPv3 works with SHA-1, SHA-2 or MD5 authentication and AES or DES privacy, everywhere Monitaria speaks SNMP: sensors, discovery, inventory and the map. With v1 or v2c, use a non-default community string restricted to the collector's IP address.

What about multiple sites and MSPs?

Install a collector at each site and link it to the hub: Add site on the hub gives you a site ID and secret, which you paste into Hub link on the collector. The hub shows every site's status in one place and flags sites that stop reporting as stale.

Security and privacy

Can I give a technician access to only some devices?

Yes. Users have a role (admin, operator or viewer) and can be limited to device types and sites. A printer technician set up as an operator limited to printers sees only printers, can acknowledge printer problems and schedule printer maintenance, and nothing else.

The limit is enforced on the server for every screen, report, dashboard and API token. The hub offers the same per-user access by site and device type.

Access control guide

Can I require two-factor sign-in?

New collectors require two-factor sign-in (an authenticator app) for admins, who set it up at their first sign-in. A collector upgraded from an earlier version keeps the setting it had. For everyone else it's optional, unless an admin requires it for everyone in Settings › Security. Single sign-on accounts use your identity provider's second step instead.

Admins can also set an idle timeout, see who is signed in, end sessions, and review every sign-in and change in the audit log.

What leaves my network?

Only a status snapshot, and only if you link a hub: sensor names, device labels, status, latest values, and status messages with IP addresses redacted. IP addresses, hostnames, monitored URLs, SNMP community strings and measurement history stay on the collector.

How is login secured?

The collector uses local accounts with a password of at least 12 characters, over HTTPS. New collectors require two-factor sign-in for admins; for everyone else it's optional. It can also use single sign-on with OpenID Connect or SAML 2.0. The hub uses sign-in with Microsoft or Google work accounts.

Pricing and support

Can I try it first?

Yes. Every collector includes a 30-day evaluation with every feature, counted from the first time it starts. When it ends, monitoring and alerts keep running; adding new sensors waits for a license.

Start a 30-day evaluation

How is pricing done?

Per device, with unlimited sites and every feature: $2.50 per network device or server and $0.50 per endpoint, per month, billed yearly. Renewals never rise more than 5% a year, and nonprofits and community health centers get 20% off. To buy, request a quote and we'll send an invoice.

How do I get support?
