Discovery

Find routers, switches, access points, printers, servers, phones and endpoints on every VLAN and site.

4 min read

Discovery combines a ping sweep, ARP, common ports, SNMP, reverse DNS, mDNS and NetBIOS names, and HTTP titles to identify each device and give it the right sensors.

  • This network: the collector's own subnet (runs automatically on first start).
  • Networks behind the router: reads the router's interfaces and routes over SNMP, so you pick which VLANs to scan.
  • Neighbors: CDP/LLDP tables on monitored switches and routers reveal access points, controllers and hypervisors.
  • Other sites: reads each site router's VLANs and scans them across the WAN.
  • Any subnet you type in.

Results come back as a checklist. Tick what to monitor and choose Add selected. Scanned networks are saved and re-checked on a schedule; new devices are listed for review or, if you choose, added automatically.

Tip: Use a read-only SNMP community other than public, restricted by ACL to the collector's address. Add it in Devices › Discovery, under SNMP communities to try. Devices that use SNMPv3 need a credential instead: see the SNMPv3 guide.
