Installing and renewing your license

How licensing works, what is counted, and what happens at renewal time.

3 min read · For admins

A license is a small signed file that names your organization, the number of devices and sites it covers, and an expiry date. The collector checks it locally, so it works on networks with no internet access.

Install a license

  1. Download the license file (monitaria.lic) from Your account › Licenses on this website, or use the copy we emailed you.
  2. Open Settings › License on the collector (Admin › License on older collectors).
  3. Choose the license file, or paste its text, and choose Install.
  4. The status changes to active and shows how many devices and sites you are using.

You can also copy the file next to config.json as monitaria.lic. The collector picks it up within a minute. Installing and removing licenses is recorded in the audit log.

What is counted

  • Devices: each monitored device counts once, however many sensors it has. A printer with toner, drum and status sensors is one device. One license file goes on every collector, and the devices they all monitor count together towards its total.
  • Sites: the collector's own site, plus each other site with monitored devices. Settings › Sites and names such as "06_HAM · …" decide which site a device is at (see the sites guide).

Monitoring never stops

Licensing never switches off monitoring or alerts. If something needs attention you see a banner, and there is a grace period before anything changes:

  • Before a license is installed, everything works for a 30-day evaluation.
  • Over the device or site limit: a warning for 14 days, then new devices can't be added until the license is extended or devices are removed.
  • After the expiry date: a warning for 30 days, then new sensors can't be added until the license is renewed.
  • Editing and removing sensors, alert rules, users and settings keeps working in every case.

Renewing

Subscriptions renew on their own: every renewal issues a new license file, emailed to your billing contact and listed under Your account › Licenses. On monthly billing that's a new file every month, to install on each collector within 7 days of each renewal; on yearly billing, once a year. The collector only warns about a subscription license in its last 7 days. For licenses bought by quote, we send a renewal file before the expiry date, and the collector warns 30 days ahead. Install a new file the same way; it replaces the old one immediately, and the old one keeps working until its own date. If your collectors report to the hub, the hub shows each site's license status so you can spot renewals and limits in one place.

Tip: Your account never connects to your collectors or the hub. Each collector checks its license file itself, offline.
